Silver pendant "Agishjalm"
Aegir is an ancient Scandinavian word meaning terror.
The helmet of horror (Aegishjalmur) is depicted as a symbol consisting of several rays with the same pattern. At first there were four rays, and the image resembled a cross. Hence one of the names of the amulet is the “cross of invincibility.” Later, design variants with 8 and 12 rays appeared.
An old Scandinavian legend tells of a fearless warrior named Sigurd. And about his battle with a dragon named Fafnir - evil, bloodthirsty and omnipotent. The great warrior won the mortal battle and took the dragon's treasures, among which was Agishjalm - a talisman that bestows strength and courage to its owner.
Northern warriors painted an image of an amulet on their foreheads (probably why it was called a “helmet”). The image was applied to armor, weapons, and various ammunition. The warriors believed that with this amulet they became invincible in battle and fought tooth and nail until their very last breath. This terrified opponents. This is where the full name of the amulet came from – “Helmet of Horror”.
